At dawn a hatch opens onto the deck of a sailboat. The light from the sun’s first rays and the clean, cool air lift his spirits. His first thought is the same every morning as he ponders the waters of the lake, his Lake Maggiore: “Blue is the colour of peace”.
“God made only water but man made wine” so wrote French poet Victor Hugo over one hundred years ago. Today his words resonate as winemaking becomes increasingly human-led rather than a natural process.
There are few places where outdoor activities are available year-round – Ticino is one of them. Known as the “Sonnenstube”, or sunshine capital, of Switzerland, Ascona draws visitors from spring to early autumn to bathe in Lake Maggiore or to venture up for a mountain hike in shorts, when at a mere 200 km away, it’s still freezing!
Two noblemen from the Baltic region founded a religion and built a temple in Minusio. Their major work, a tondo entitled “The Clear World of the Blessed”, will be back on show to the public in Monte Verità on 2021.
